Why We Built FillitUp.uk
It started when one of us got stung paying way over the odds on a motorway fill-up, not realising a cheaper station was just a few miles up the road. So we built the app we wished we’d had: one that shows you what’s cheapest along the route you’re already driving, not just what’s nearby.
The Story
We’d also had enough of the other fuel apps out there. Every one seemed to want an account, a login, or to show you adverts before you could see a price. We just wanted to know where fuel was cheap, so FillitUp.uk has none of that: no account, no adverts, no signup. Just prices.
Data comes from the official UK Government Fuel Price Transparency API, but using it doesn’t mean the government endorses or is affiliated with FillitUp.uk in any way. It’s built independently by Glow New Media Ltd.
How It Works
Live Data
Our server polls the government API every 30 minutes, fetching only prices that have changed since the last poll.
Nearby or By Route
Search by postcode or GPS to find the cheapest station near you. Or switch to Along a Route to see every station on your planned journey, sorted by price.
Route Planning
Enter a start and end postcode to see every fuel station within your chosen distance of the route, so you can fill up cheaply without going out of your way.
Mobile App
The iOS and Android app includes a live map, route planning, and one-tap navigation to your chosen station. The My Car feature retrieves your MOT and road tax dates by passing your vehicle registration to the DVLA API via our server; the registration isn't stored. The returned dates are saved locally on your device.
LPG and HVO
Fuels most comparison sites ignore. Find LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) stations across the UK, and search for HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) prices at stations that stock it.
ChargeItUp
Find public EV charge points near you or along a route. Filter by charge speed and see usage costs. Data from OpenChargeMap, covering all major UK networks.
One-Tap Navigation
Click Go next to any station to open Google Maps with turn-by-turn directions to that station. In route mode, it routes via the station so you stay on your planned journey.
Free
No adverts, no subscriptions, and you don't need to log in. If it's useful to you, a small donation helps keep the servers running.
Where the Prices Come From
Every price on FillitUp.uk comes from the UK Government Fuel Price Transparency API. Fuel retailers are required to publish their pump prices, and we poll the feed every 30 minutes, fetching only the prices that have changed. Each price shows the time the station reported it, so you can always see how fresh the data is.
Who Made This
FillitUp.uk comes from the team at Glow New Media Ltd, a small web design company not far from Liverpool. We built the first version in a weekend, using the government’s newly opened fuel price API, and just kept going from there.
