Fuel brand questions

Which fuel brand has the cheapest petrol today?

Costco has the lowest average unleaded price today at 166.0p a litre, followed by Morrisons (171.2p) and Asda (171.4p). The UK average is 173.1p.

Which fuel brand has the cheapest diesel today?

Costco has the lowest average diesel price today at 188.8p a litre, followed by Asda (196.0p) and Tesco (196.0p). The UK average is 198.2p.

Which fuel brand is the most expensive?

BP has the highest average unleaded price of the brands listed, at 176.7p a litre, 10.7p more than Costco.

Is supermarket fuel cheaper?

Yes, today. The supermarket brands average 171.6p a litre for unleaded, against 173.4p for the other brands (not counting members-only Costco), about 1.8p less. That is roughly £0.99 on a 55 litre tank.

Why do prices vary between stations of the same brand?

Many branded stations are run by independent dealers or franchisees who set their own prices. Motorway services and remote rural stations usually charge more, and stations near a supermarket tend to price more keenly. The Cheapest column shows the lowest price at any station of that brand.

Is fuel from a cheaper brand lower quality?

No. All petrol and diesel sold in the UK must meet the same British Standards (BS EN 228 for petrol, BS EN 590 for diesel), whoever sells it. Premium fuels differ through extra additives and, for petrol, a higher octane rating.

How are these averages worked out?

Each average uses the prices that brand's stations have reported to the government's Fuel Finder scheme in the last 7 days. Prices below 80p or above 350p a litre are ignored as likely input errors. The Reporting column shows the share of each brand's stations with a price from the last 7 days.
