How accurate is Fuel Finder’s fuel price data?

Mostly very accurate. Of the 8,084 open stations in the government's Fuel Finder scheme today, 99% have prices that look right; 63 have a possible price error and 1 has a price out of range. Some station details look wrong: 12 pairs look listed twice and 21 have opening hours that look wrong.

Prices can also be out of date. 1,404 stations (17%) have a fuel price that hasn't changed for over 30 days. Pump prices rarely stay the same for a month. Only a station can correct its own details, so we flag problems and list them below.

What is Fuel Finder?

Fuel Finder is the UK government's fuel price scheme. Under the Motor Fuel Price (Open Data) Regulations 2025, every business selling petrol or diesel to the public had to register its UK stations by 2 February 2026 and must report any price change within 30 minutes. The prices are published as open data, which FillitUp and other fuel price apps use.

How often is Fuel Finder updated?

Stations must report a price change within 30 minutes, so the data changes throughout the day. Prices that haven't changed don't need reporting again. FillitUp checks Fuel Finder for changes every 30 minutes and reloads every station once a week.

Does Fuel Finder list every UK fuel station?

It should, as every station selling petrol or diesel to the public must be registered. It lists 8,138 stations today, 54 of them marked as temporarily closed. A few look listed twice, the same brand twice within 50 metres (12 pairs today), and a few are placed in the wrong spot on the map. Both are listed on this page.

Can I use the Fuel Finder data myself?

Yes. The data is open, and GOV.UK explains how to get it through the Fuel Finder API or by email. Expect the same issues described on this page: the data is exactly what stations submit.

Is the price on FillitUp the price I'll pay at the pump?

Almost always. Stations must report a price change to the government's Fuel Finder scheme within 30 minutes, and we check for changes every 30 minutes, so a new price can take up to about an hour to appear. Always check the pump before you fill up.

Why does a station show a price from weeks ago?

Stations only have to report when their price changes, so an old date can simply mean the price hasn't changed. It can also mean a station isn't reporting. We grey out prices older than 7 days and leave them out of the cheapest and average figures on our town and brand pages. Our stale price tracker shows how many stations are behind.

Why do I sometimes see a price like 1.3p or 1,399p?

That is almost always a typing error by the station, such as entering pounds instead of pence. Any price below 80p or above 350p a litre is marked as out of range on this page and left out of the cheapest and average figures on our town and brand pages.

Can FillitUp correct a wrong price?

No. Only the station can change its price in Fuel Finder, and we never edit a price ourselves. Instead we flag prices that look wrong and list them here, so you can see exactly what we're showing and why.

Why is a station in the wrong place on the map?

Stations submit their own map position, and a few are wrong, for example placed in the sea or another country. We check each station's position against its postcode and review any that don't match, and a position clearly outside the UK is corrected automatically from the station's address. If you spot a station in the wrong place, email [email protected] with its name and we'll fix it.

Who checks that stations report correctly?

The Competition and Markets Authority oversees Fuel Finder and can take enforcement action against stations that persistently report late or report wrong prices.

Do other fuel price apps show the same prices?

Mostly. Every UK fuel price app now uses the same Fuel Finder data, though some, like PetrolPrices and Waze, also take updates from their drivers. Differences come from how often each app checks for updates and how it handles errors like the ones on this page.
